The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has confirmed that a joint inspection was conducted yesterday morning after receiving reports of a fuel slick observed in Suva Harbour, near the beacon opposite the China Club.

In a statement, the Ministry explained that inspectors collaborated with officials from Fiji Ports Limited to perform an on-site boat inspection and drone surveillance. This effort was aimed at assessing the extent of the reported pollution and identifying its potential source.

As is often the case, the Ministry noted that the fuel slick dissipated with the incoming tide. Investigations are ongoing, and the area will be monitored closely for any additional signs of pollution.

In light of this incident, the Ministry has issued a strong reminder to all businesses and vessel operators to exercise increased caution when handling fuel, oil, and other hazardous substances. This proactive approach is crucial in preventing pollution of waterways and protecting the marine environment.

This incident highlights the importance of environmental stewardship and the need for continued vigilance in safeguarding our natural resources. The authorities are committed to taking necessary steps to ensure the health of Suva Harbour and its surrounding ecosystems.
