Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) early Friday morning in Scottsdale. As reported by TMZ, the 30-year-old Canadian player was cooperative during the encounter and was released approximately 80 minutes later, around 3:20 a.m.
Brooks, who is currently recovering from a fractured hand sustained during a game against the Orlando Magic on February 21, is expected to miss four to six weeks of play. His absence has dealt a significant blow to the Suns, who entered Friday with a record of 35-27, sitting in the seventh position in the Western Conference standings.
Known for his tenacious playing style and ability to provoke opponents, Brooks has garnered a reputation as one of the league’s most polarizing figures. Despite the criticisms he faces, he has been a crucial asset for playoff-contending teams like the Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets before joining the Suns.
In earlier comments to ESPN, Brooks elaborated on his competitive nature, stating, “You see on the court, it might not be ‘professional’ because I talk a lot of s—. I run my mouth. I’m yelling. I’m yelling to the crowd, blah, blah, blah. But that’s just in the game. That’s my persona.”
Before his injury, Brooks was having a standout season, averaging a career-best 20.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. However, the Suns have struggled in his absence, posting a 2-2 record, including a narrow defeat to the Chicago Bulls by a score of 105-103.
As the Suns navigate this challenging season, it remains to be seen how Brooks’ situation will impact the team both on and off the court. With a resilient attitude, the Suns will look to regroup and find stability as they aim for a successful playoff run amidst the adversity.
