Stroke is increasingly becoming a significant health issue for younger Fijians, countering the long-held belief that it predominantly affects older adults. This rising concern is beautifully highlighted through the personal experience of Mereane Vavataga, who endured a mild stroke at the age of 64 in 2023. Despite the challenges posed by her condition, Vavataga remains resilient, viewing her ordeal as both a challenge and an unexpected source of compassion for others facing similar battles.

“In 2023, I suffered a mild stroke. That was quite a hindrance to my work. Even though I could say it was a hindrance, on the other hand, it was a blessing in disguise. Because of the empathy, now I feel what the survivors feel, a heart of compassion, humbling,” she reflects, emphasizing how her experience has transformed her perspective.

Elizabeth Fong, President of Counterstroke Fiji, underscores the changing landscape of stroke risk, pointing out that it is no longer an affliction confined to the elderly. Statistics indicate that young adults and those in midlife are increasingly susceptible to strokes. Advocates stress the importance of lifestyle choices, such as diet, exercise, and stress management, which play pivotal roles in stroke prevention. They reiterate that early detection is crucial and can ultimately save lives.

Fong expresses concern over the shifting demographics of stroke patients, stating, “Most things, we used to think older people have a stroke. Older people get cancer. But when you look at the statistics now, you’re covering the whole gamut, from when you’re starting work to those who are right in the middle to those who are at the peak.” She calls upon Fijians to take the threat of stroke seriously, as it can strike unexpectedly and at any age.

Vavataga’s hope is that by sharing her story, she can motivate others to remain vigilant about their health. She believes that increased awareness and empathy can greatly aid families in supporting stroke survivors. Health experts advocate incorporating simple preventive measures into daily routines, including balanced diets, regular physical activity, and effective stress management to mitigate stroke risks.

This movement towards awareness and proactive health measures reflects a growing recognition that everyone should prioritize their well-being, regardless of age.
