StormReady Alert Day as Major Winter Snowstorm Targets the Region

A significant winter storm is anticipated to bring the heaviest snowfall of the season so far to much of the region. In response to this impending storm, a StormReady Alert Day has been issued.

Snow will begin to develop in various areas by Saturday afternoon, with the intensity increasing Saturday evening. The forecast indicates that by Saturday night, travel conditions will deteriorate significantly, as roads are expected to become completely snow-covered. Authorities strongly advise against traveling unless absolutely necessary.

As the snow continues into Sunday morning, travel will still be challenging, with conditions gradually improving later in the day. However, it may take time for road crews to clear the roads, especially secondary routes, which could remain hazardous into Sunday night and possibly Monday morning in the hardest-hit areas. It’s likely that some schools may consider closures on Monday due to the lingering effects of the snow.

In addition to the snowfall, winds are predicted to pick up on Sunday, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph. This could make it feel even colder while residents are clearing snow. Fortunately, the nature of this snowfall means that blowing and drifting are expected to be minimal, making it perfect for winter activities like sledding and building snowmen.

However, individuals clearing the heavier snow should exercise caution, taking breaks and pacing themselves to avoid exertion-related risks.

Forecasts indicate that areas surrounding US-127 and US-23 to I-75 could see snowfall totals of 5 to 8 inches, with some locations potentially reporting even higher amounts. Eastward, totals will diminish to around 3 to 7 inches, with the lowest amounts expected in the Thumb region. While there may be a few pockets where snowfall exceeds 7 inches, this remains unlikely.

Residents are encouraged to stay tuned for updates as the storm approaches, both on-air and online. With appropriate precautions, this snowstorm could not only disrupt travel but also provide opportunities for enjoying the winter weather in a fun and safe manner.
