The recent launch of the Starlink satellite internet system in Waivaka Village marks a transformative step towards enhancing connectivity for students and residents in the Namosi region, an area that has long struggled with inadequate internet access. Acting district officer Susana Rokodakonivosa underscored the significance of this initiative, particularly for secondary and tertiary students who have faced numerous obstacles in completing research and submitting online assignments due to the lack of reliable internet service.
Rokodakonivosa pointed out that Namosi consists of four districts classified as black zones, where residents have been deprived of any internet connectivity. In response, the Ministry of Communications has embarked on a project to install Starlink services in 15 villages throughout Namosi, which will facilitate both internet and voice services to the local community.
The system will primarily be accessible at community halls, allowing residents to share the service while ensuring that students have the necessary resources to succeed. This rollout in Waivaka will also benefit neighboring areas, including Narukunibua, Nasigatoka, and Namosi Village, fostering a broader impact on the regional community.
The commissioning event for the Starlink systems in the four districts was led by Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalurua, highlighting the importance of this project in reducing the digital divide present in rural areas. With this advancement in connectivity, there is a hopeful outlook for improving educational opportunities and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents. As the community embraces this new technology, it is poised to support learning and development, aiding in the growth and empowerment of its youth and contributing to the region’s progress.
