Stargate Returns to Prime Video with New Series from Martin Gero

Amazon is set to revive the iconic “Stargate” franchise with an exciting new television series, as reported by Variety. This new project comes from the talented Martin Gero, who has a deep-rooted history with the “Stargate” universe, having begun his career as a Story Editor on “Stargate: Atlantis.” While specific plot details remain undisclosed, the series is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios and will air exclusively on Prime Video.

Gero expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on ‘Stargate: Atlantis.’ I spent five years in the franchise, and ‘Stargate’ taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA. I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase.” He reassured long-time fans that the new series aims to celebrate the legacy of “Stargate,” while also inviting newcomers to experience its captivating world.

In addition to Gero, the project boasts a robust lineup of executive producers including Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures, alongside Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, the original creators of the “Stargate” film. Longtime contributors to the franchise, Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, will join as consulting producers, ensuring that the new series respectfully honors the original material.

Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV development for Amazon MGM Studios, emphasized the franchise’s enduring appeal: “’Stargate’ is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos. In partnership with our extraordinary creative team, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience.”

The journey to this revival began back in 2022 when Amazon announced plans to develop new “Stargate” projects following its acquisition of MGM Studios. The original “Stargate” launched in 1994 with a film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell, followed by the acclaimed series “Stargate SG-1,” which ran for ten seasons and featured actors like Richard Dean Anderson and Amanda Tapping. The franchise also includes spinoffs such as “Stargate Atlantis” and several direct-to-video films, with the latest series being “Stargate Origins” released in 2018.

Beyond his contributions to “Stargate,” Gero is also recognized for his work on NBC’s “Blindspot,” the reboot of “Quantum Leap,” and other notable television series. With a creative vision grounded in nostalgia yet looking toward an ambitious future, the new “Stargate” series holds promise for both dedicated fans and new audiences alike.
