Starbucks Faces Holiday Shifts: Union Protests, Extended Hours, and a Target Peppermint Drink Debut

On November 16, 2023, Starbucks Workers United members and advocates gathered outside a Starbucks in Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C., to protest during the company’s “Red Cup Day,” which marks the start of the holiday season. The protesters aimed to urge Starbucks to honor union rights and improve working conditions, especially in non-union locations. This demonstration highlights the ongoing focus on labor rights in the retail and food service sectors, where Starbucks has faced criticism for its treatment of employees amidst rising unionization efforts.

As the busy holiday shopping season approaches, consumer interest is shifting towards venues where they can refuel and relax. With Black Friday set for November 28, 2025, Starbucks locations nationwide are adjusting their hours to accommodate the increased foot traffic. The Starbucks Reserve at the Empire State Building will operate from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., while other popular locations, including one at 61 9th Avenue in New York, will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. In Chicago, the Starbucks Roastery will welcome customers from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and a San Antonio location will adjust its hours from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Customers are reminded to verify the operating hours of their nearest Starbucks through the company’s store locator or Google Maps.

In addition to welcoming customers, Starbucks is launching a new seasonal beverage in collaboration with Target, starting November 18, 2025. The Frozen Peppermint Hot Chocolate combines rich chocolate with refreshing peppermint flavor, topped with peppermint-flavored whipped cream and festive sprinkles. Alicia Binion, part of Starbucks’ beverage development team, noted that this drink is intended to offer a sweet respite during the holiday rush.

“This beverage brings together rich chocolate and cool peppermint flavors, as well as red and green sprinkles for a pop of color and crunch. It’s a sweet way to pause during the holiday rush and enjoy a little seasonal cheer,” Binion expressed.

The introduction of this festive drink aligns perfectly with the heightened consumer excitement as the holiday season unfolds, contributing to the celebratory atmosphere of Black Friday and beyond.
