Stanford University has announced the appointment of Tavita Pritchard as the new head football coach. Pritchard, an alumnus who played quarterback for the Cardinal from 2006 to 2009, begins his new role immediately following the Washington Commanders’ game against the Denver Broncos this Sunday, where he has served as the quarterbacks coach for the past three seasons.
He takes over from interim coach Frank Reich, who stepped in earlier this spring after the dismissal of Troy Taylor amid ongoing controversies. Under Reich’s leadership, Stanford has recorded a 4-7 season as they head into their final game against No. 9 Notre Dame.
Pritchard’s journey began at Stanford in 2010 as a graduate assistant. He has climbed through various roles in the coaching staff, including stints as a defensive assistant, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach. His recent success with the Commanders includes mentoring Jayden Daniels, who earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year accolades after leading his team to the NFC Championship game.
Stanford’s ambitious push for revitalization comes in light of their struggles over recent years. The Cardinal have not achieved a winning season since 2020 and have participated in bowl games less frequently, last competing in 2018. This includes a period of notable decline where they recorded a 14-28 record in the final years under David Shaw and only 6-18 during Taylor’s tenure.
Andrew Luck, the current general manager and former quarterback at Stanford, expressed confidence in Pritchard’s capabilities. He emphasized the importance of leadership and culture-building in college football, stating that Pritchard is well-equipped to foster excellence on and off the field.
