Spartans Eye Road Win in Reno Rivalry Against Nevada

San Jose State University (SJSU) is gearing up for a crucial matchup against the University of Nevada at MacKay Stadium in Reno, Nevada, on Saturday, November 15, 2025. The game, set to kick off at 12:30 PM PDT, will be broadcast live on CBS Sports and aired on radio at 860 KTRB AM for listeners in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Spartans enter the contest with a 3-6 overall record, including 2-3 in Mountain West (MW) play, while the Wolf Pack struggles with a 1-8 record and remain winless within the conference at 0-5. Historically, Nevada leads the rivalry with a significant edge, boasting a series record of 23 wins against just 2 losses and 12 ties. The last time SJSU won in Reno was back in 2000, a decisive 49-30 victory highlighted by standout performances from running backs Deonce Whitaker and Jamar Julien.

Head coach Ken Niumatalolo acknowledges the challenge of playing in Reno, noting, “All I know is we haven’t won up there in a long time. It’s a hard place to play and to win.” He emphasized the similarities between the two teams, both of which have faced their fair share of close losses this season. With a nod to the historical context, Niumatalolo seeks to inspire his team to focus on their performance rather than get bogged down by statistics or past outcomes.

The Spartans are coming off a disappointing offensive showing against Air Force, but Niumatalolo is optimistic about the team’s resilience. “I’ve been impressed with the fortitude of our guys, especially with these tough losses,” he remarked, highlighting the need for improvement on both offense and defense.

San Jose State’s quarterback, Walker Eget, has been battling injuries but remains determined to lead his team. Offensive coordinator Craig Stutzmann expressed confidence in Eget’s ability to perform, stating, “We’ve got to find ways to keep him healthy.” Eget has been impressive this season, currently ranked as the top passer in the conference and the nation.

Despite injuries to the offensive line, which have prevented consistent play, Stutzmann notes, “It’s been one of those years… but at the same time, we don’t do a ton upfront.” The effectiveness of the offense heavily relies on the performance of the wide receiving corps, which includes standout Danny Scudero, leading in receptions nationally.

On the defensive side, the Spartans’ front-seven is described as athletic but not always dominant. Defensive coordinator Derrick Odum emphasizes the importance of assignment execution while allowing players to showcase their instincts on the field. The team has experienced defensive struggles but has a core of talented players, including linebacker Jordan Pollard, ranked among the top tacklers in the conference.

The upcoming game presents an opportunity for both teams to prove themselves amid challenging seasons. As the Spartans prepare for this vital matchup against their rivals, the hope remains that they can turn adversity into a triumphant performance on the field.
