With NASA’s Artemis II moon mission currently on hold, SpaceX continued its ambitious agenda by successfully launching four new crew members to the International Space Station (ISS) on February 13. This mission aims to replace four astronauts who returned to Earth a month earlier due to a medical issue experienced by one crew member.
The Crew 12 team, consisting of commander Jessica Meir, pilot Jack Hathaway, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, blasted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 5:15 a.m. EST, riding atop a Falcon 9 rocket. The launch ignited the pre-dawn sky, marking a smooth ascent aimed at docking with the ISS at approximately 3:15 p.m. on the following day, enhancing the station’s crew from three to a fully-staffed seven.
“Turns out Friday the 13th is a very lucky day,” SpaceX Launch Control announced once the crew reached orbit, to which Meir enthusiastically replied, “That was quite a ride.”
Originally, Crew 12’s launch was scheduled after NASA’s Artemis II crew was set to embark on a mission to the moon, but delays caused by hydrogen fuel leaks in the massive Space Launch System (SLS) rocket allowed for an earlier launch. Crew 12’s launch date was then moved forward due to impending high winds which compromised safety protocols for splashdowns in emergency situations.
While Crew 12 prepared for their mission, engineers conducted tests on the SLS rocket’s fuel line seals. Although the tests faced challenges due to a frozen filter, they are essential steps before the rocket’s next fueling rehearsal, which is planned for a launch as early as March 3.
As Crew 12 joins station commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, cosmonaut Sergey Mikaev, and NASA astronaut Chris Williams, the mix of experience promises a smooth transition at the ISS. Meir and Fedyaev are seasoned astronauts, while Hathaway and Adenot bring a wealth of operational excellence from their backgrounds—Hathaway as a skilled fighter pilot and Adenot as an air force helicopter test pilot.
Crew 12 takes on their duties while returning to full operational capacity at the ISS, following the premature return of Crew 11 due to a medical issue. NASA is eager to support ongoing research aboard the station, which had been hindered by Crew 11’s early departure and the resultant reduced workforce.
