SpaceX has introduced a temporary initiative to provide free Starlink internet service to residents of Venezuela following recent U.S. military actions, including airstrikes and the apprehension of former President Nicolás Maduro. This service is available for users who already possess a Starlink dish and will remain active until February 3.
However, due to U.S. sanctions, the legal sale of Starlink services within Venezuela is not permitted, which limits access primarily to those who have acquired dishes through the black market. Reports indicate that Starlink dishes are available for purchase illegally in Venezuela, with sellers openly advertising their services, allowing customers to utilize international credit cards to bypass restrictions.
For users who have the necessary equipment, SpaceX has proactively credited their accounts with free service until the cutoff date. The company encourages customers with a Starlink dish to select a Roam plan to access the internet in Venezuela. Although SpaceX is keeping a close watch on the situation and regulatory developments, it has not specified when or if local purchase options may become available in the future.
Starlink is currently operational in all South American nations except Bolivia and Suriname, which are set to be added in 2026. SpaceX has a track record of providing complimentary Starlink access to regions experiencing turmoil, having previously offered the service in conflict-stricken Ukraine and in Tonga following a major underwater cable failure in 2022.
Moreover, Venezuela’s internet infrastructure continues to suffer, with the nation historically facing connectivity challenges primarily due to its ongoing economic crisis. Recent speed tests reveal Venezuela has the slowest mobile internet in Latin America, averaging just 14.59 Mbps, in stark contrast to the United Arab Emirates, which boasts an impressive average of 428.53 Mbps.
