Actor Lewis Pullman shared his unique journey from watching his father’s iconic sci-fi comedy, Spaceballs, to starring alongside him in the eagerly awaited sequel, Spaceballs 2. During his appearance on The View, Lewis reminisced about how his father, Bill Pullman, had limited films that he could watch as a child, noting that Spaceballs was one of them.

The original 1987 film, featuring Bill Pullman alongside Rick Moranis and Daphne Zuniga, is celebrated as a humorous parody of famous sci-fi classics like Star Wars, Star Trek, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Interestingly, Lewis revealed he watched Spaceballs before the original Star Wars trilogy, leading to a humorous household moment when he exclaimed, “Why did they remake Spaceballs without any of the jokes?” upon finally seeing Star Wars.

Lewis acknowledged the significance of the original film, describing it as the one that “really launched” his father’s career and referring to the sequel’s production as stepping onto “sacred grounds.” Recently concluding filming for Spaceballs 2, he expressed his excitement, remarking, “The writing is so smart and so dumb at the same time, in the best way,” further highlighting how enjoyable it was to collaborate with his father.

Returning to the franchise are original cast members Moranis and Zuniga, with new faces like Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Anthony Carrigan, and George Wyner joining the adventure.

When discussing working with legendary director and writer Mel Brooks, who contributed to the sequel’s writing, Lewis reflected on their connection. While they did not meet in person, Brooks remained a significant presence in the film’s creative process. Lewis fondly shared how Brooks reached out with a voice note when offering him the role, saying, “I couldn’t believe it… I wish you could frame a voice note.”

Anticipation builds as Spaceballs 2 is expected to hit theaters in 2027, promising both nostalgia and new comedic adventures for fans of the original film.
