Georgia head coach Kirby Smart’s father, Sonny Smart, has passed away following complications from hip surgery. The announcement was made by the university after Sonny experienced a fall in New Orleans just before the Sugar Bowl.
A well-respected figure in high school football coaching in Alabama and Georgia, Sonny fell while walking on New Year’s Eve, resulting in a fractured hip. He underwent surgery at Ochsner Medical Center but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries, surrounded by family, as confirmed by the university statement.
The Smart family was in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, which had been delayed a day due to a horrific incident where a truck drove into a crowd celebrating the New Year, tragically resulting in 14 deaths and multiple injuries. In the game itself, Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs faced defeat against Notre Dame, with a final score of 23-10.
Sonny Smart was not able to attend the national championship game in January 2023, when Georgia secured a decisive victory against TCU, largely due to his declining health. Prior to these health challenges, he had been a regular presence at games since Kirby took the helm at Georgia in 2016.
Sonny Smart is survived by his wife, Sharon, and their three children: Karl, Kirby, and Kendall. Following his passing, the Smart family expressed their gratitude to the medical staff at Ochsner for the care provided to Sonny. They also called for prayers for those affected by the tragic events on New Year’s Day, highlighting the importance of community support and love in difficult times.
This situation serves as a poignant reminder of the strength of family bonds and the profound impact that a loved one can have in both personal and professional realms. The condolences and support from fans and the wider community illustrate how sports connect people and foster a sense of unity, especially during trying times.
