The Solomon Islands has expressed its support for Zimbabwe’s bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term. Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele met with Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Amon Murwira, in Honiara to underscore this endorsement, which also highlighted the importance of enhancing diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Manele described the meeting as a crucial step towards fostering closer ties and articulated that cooperation would enable both countries to amplify their voices on shared challenges and interests. Zimbabwe stands as the only candidate endorsed by the African States Group for the upcoming council term and has garnered support from the Southern African Development Community and the African Union.

Both nations, as members of the United Nations, the Group of 77 and China, and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States, are united in their commitment to South-South cooperation and development goals. Climate change emerged as a key topic during discussions, with Manele stressing its significance as a security issue for Small Island Developing States. He called for greater engagement in addressing this urgent concern within the context of the Security Council.

The structure of the UN Security Council includes five permanent members and ten non-permanent members, who serve two-year terms elected by the General Assembly. This move by the Solomon Islands reflects a growing trend among nations to support one another in international governance and reflects optimism towards a more united front on global issues.
