A student was shot at Skyline High School in Oakland on Wednesday afternoon, prompting immediate police response and resulting in the detention of two juvenile suspects. Authorities confirmed that the victim is expected to survive the incident, which occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Skyline Boulevard.

Oakland Police Assistant Chief James Beere reported that 911 calls started pouring in within moments of the shooting. Officers arrived just two minutes after the calls and found the injured student, who was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital. While the police have a working theory regarding the motive behind the shooting, they have chosen not to disclose specific details at this time.

During the investigation, two firearms were located at the scene, and it was confirmed that multiple shots were fired. Although the police could not definitively state whether the suspects were students of Skyline High School, both individuals are juveniles and in custody. Notably, the victim was not armed during the incident.

John Sasaki, spokesperson for the Oakland Unified School District, expressed relief that there was only one injury and that it was not more serious. “Unfortunately, there was one injury, but we’re so grateful there’s just one injury, and we’re so grateful that injury wasn’t more serious,” he stated, highlighting the rapid response of school staff following the shooting.

Beere condemned the violence occurring on school campuses, stating, “These are our children. Having access to firearms alone is unbelievable, let alone that violence is occurring in and around our campuses. It’s our number one priority to make sure our children are safe and their schools are safe.”

The school district informed parents that the shooting took place in a bathroom of the 20 Building, and they acknowledged the emotional impact it had on students, staff, and families. “This incident naturally left many students, staff, and families shaken,” the district expressed, adding their gratitude towards the swift response of both staff and students that helped ensure everyone’s safety.

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee also arrived at the scene, affirming that “no child should have to experience this” and “no school should have to be traumatized by what took place.”

As the investigation continues, the Oakland community remains hopeful that measures will be taken to enhance the safety and well-being of students in schools.
