The Skipper Select team is poised for a thrilling encounter against the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, having established their training camp in Sigatoka and utilizing the HPU Gym at Lawaqa Park for preparations. Head coach Rupeni Nasiga considers this match a critical trial as the team gears up for the upcoming Skipper Cup season.
Coach Nasiga shared that the training sessions are going smoothly, despite a few players facing minor injuries from their participation in the recent McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s. He expressed optimism about the team’s cohesion, stating that players are gradually finding their rhythm and becoming more comfortable in their respective roles.
“This match represents an important milestone in our development and serves as a fantastic opportunity for local players to showcase their talents as they aspire for higher selection,” Nasiga emphasized. He noted that the Skipper Select team, also referred to as Skipper XV, includes skilled athletes from the 2025 Skipper Cup provincial competition.
The eagerly awaited pre-season match is set for the 6th of next month in Lautoka. It promises to be an excellent chance for the Skipper Select team to measure their capabilities against a strong opponent while allowing local talent to shine. This opportunity could lead to future prospects with the Fijian Drua. As both teams prepare for their respective challenges— with the Drua also facing the Chiefs in their first pre-season match next Friday at Mount Maunganui— the excitement surrounding the rugby season continues to build.
