Fiji Meth Case Expands as Fresh Charges Linked to Additional Shipments

Six charged in Fiji over new meth shipments as High Court case advances in Lautoka

Six individuals have been charged in connection with the importation of more than 4.8 kilograms of methamphetamine in Fiji, and they are now facing further allegations for facilitating two additional shipments of the drug. The accused include Nigerian national Chukwuemeka Phabian, businessman Apenisa Matadigo, police officers Uraia Tuidama Bolalailai and Viliame Nalagi, former Fiji Airways driver Neumi Donumainasava, and senior customs officer Osea Raicama Dakai.

The court has heard that these defendants were involved in the importation of a second consignment weighing 2,160.8 grams of meth, as well as a third shipment consisting of 978.967 grams, which occurred between March and July of this year. Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions John Rabuku explained that there is an ongoing case against these individuals in the High Court and requested that the new charges be consolidated into that case.

While bail was sought by the defendants, Rabuku noted that the State did not oppose the bail request, given that the individuals had complied with previous bail conditions. Each defendant was subsequently granted non-cash bail of $5,000, contingent upon strict conditions. The case has now been moved to the High Court in Lautoka for a mention scheduled for November 25.

This legal development is part of a broader effort to tackle drug trafficking in Fiji, which has seen intensified enforcement actions recently. Prior coverage has shown a significant crackdown on such criminal activities, underlining the commitment of Fijian authorities to ensure community safety and uphold integrity within the law enforcement sector. As the situation unfolds, there is hope that these decisive actions will help deter drug-related crimes and contribute to a safer community for all citizens.
