The Sinukakala Amazon women’s rugby team is gearing up for their debut in the senior division at the Fiji Bitter Labasa 7s tournament, scheduled from Thursday to Saturday at Subrail Park. This exciting venture comes on the heels of their notable performances in the Fiji Sports Council Under-20 7s tournaments, where they regularly reached the finals.

Head coach Tomasi Katonivualiku is filled with enthusiasm as the team prepares for this new challenge. He shared that this marks a pivotal moment for the team, allowing them to display their talents at an elevated level. “This is the first year our team is playing in the senior division. We have been participating in the Fiji Sports Council U20 7s tournaments and have been doing well playing in the finals,” Katonivualiku explained.

This tournament also represents a geographical milestone for the team as they venture to the North for the first time, which has heightened the players’ excitement. “We are excited to travel to the North and play at Subrail Park; last year, we were competing only within Viti Levu in Suva and the West,” he added.

Katonivualiku pointed out that while the team is relatively young, they have been diligently preparing for the past three weeks. The coaching staff is committed to addressing any past weaknesses to enhance their likelihood of success in the upcoming matches.

The coach also emphasized the positive impacts rugby has had on the players’ lives, noting that previous prize money earned has benefited their families. He advocates for continued participation in sports, highlighting its role in promoting healthy lifestyles and deterring youth from negative influences, such as drug use.

As a native of Dreketi, Katonivualiku has called on local supporters to rally behind the team during the tournament, fostering a sense of community and pride.

Meanwhile, the EZERS women’s team will be returning to defend their title, creating a competitive atmosphere for the women’s tournament, which features teams like Vuna Sisters, Seahawks, Tagimoucia Ranadi, Lilian Amazons, Loloma Heights, and Kadavu Stallions. With anticipation building, teams are set to deliver thrilling performances in the spirit of rugby, promising an exciting event for all involved.
