Sigatoka District School is set to commemorate its storied rugby legacy as two of its standout athletes, Rupeni Raviyawa and James Tuituba, proudly return in their Junior All Blacks jerseys. Raviyawa, originally from Nasama Village in Nadroga with connections to Nasigatoka Village, currently attends Feilding High School in Wellington, New Zealand. Tuituba makes history as the second graduate from the SDS Rugby Academy to reach this notable milestone, underscoring the Academy’s renown for developing outstanding rugby talent.
Sevina Tove, the Head of School, expressed that the SDS Rugby Academy is dedicated not only to refining rugby skills but also to cultivating resilience, character, and strength among young men. “These boys are champions on and off the field,” she stated. Tove took a moment to acknowledge the ongoing partnership with Ratu Kadavulevu School, which continues to welcome Year 8 students from Sigatoka, contributing to their growth in both rugby and education.
This year, four young prospects are preparing for interviews to secure places at Ratu Kadavulevu for 2026. Both Raviyawa and Tuituba have successfully navigated this path from Sigatoka District School to Ratu Kadavulevu, eventually winning scholarships in New Zealand. Tove highlighted this as a shining endorsement of the grassroots rugby development program’s success.
Sigatoka District School has long been a breeding ground for national rugby representatives. Renowned past players, such as Watile Tuinagiagia, Ratu Meli Kurisaru, and Epi Satavu have left an indelible mark on the school’s rugby history. To honor this tradition, a special display on the HT Office Sports Achievements Wall will be created.
The exhibition will feature framed jerseys and photographs of former students who have gone on to excel in both local and international rugby, providing motivation for future generations. Along with Raviyawa and Tuituba, celebrated alumni such as Ratu Jone Ulunisau and Josateki Tuituba continue to shine, demonstrating that Sigatoka’s Academy not only fosters talented athletes but also nurtures well-rounded individuals prepared for success in various aspects of life. This celebration of achievement reinforces Sigatoka District School’s commitment to developing future champions.
