Airlines across the United States experienced substantial disruptions on Sunday, as over 2,200 flights were canceled amid an ongoing government shutdown that has now lasted more than 40 days. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy issued a strong warning about the potential for air travel to dwindle to a “trickle” in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving. Effective Friday, airlines were required to reduce their daily flights by 4% at 40 key airports, a figure that is set to rise to 10% by November 14. Without a resolution, Duffy warned that travelers may find it difficult to secure flights as the holiday season approaches, with Thanksgiving scheduled for November 27 when millions travel to connect with family and friends.
Sunday’s cancellations marked the highest number since the shutdown commenced, with over 7,200 delays also reported by the afternoon. Major airlines such as United Airlines have begun preemptively canceling flights, with reports indicating 190 cancellations for Monday and 269 for Tuesday. By early Sunday evening, the FAA noted staffing challenges at 12 control towers, further exacerbating the situation for approximately 3.2 million passengers affected by the shutdown.
This situation is reminiscent of operational difficulties during previous government shutdowns, with the FAA currently facing a staffing shortfall of 1,000 to 2,000 controllers. These pre-existing challenges have become critically intensified under the current political deadlock.
