The Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens tournament is proudly commemorating its 50th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of grassroots rugby in Fiji. Since its inception in 1976, the tournament has evolved from a modest gathering into one of the most esteemed rugby sevens competitions in the country, a transformation made possible through its longstanding partnership with Fiji Bitter.
Lawrence Tikaram, President of the Marist Rugby Club, expressed his pride in the tournament’s remarkable growth, stating, “From just a handful of teams in the early days to 120 teams competing over three days, the growth has been phenomenal.” He noted that the tournament is now widely recognized as Fiji’s most challenging sevens competition, crediting much of its success to the unwavering support from Fiji Bitter.
Etrina Simpson, Head of Marketing – Alcohol at Coca-Cola Europacific Enterprises, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, remarking, “For 50 years, Fiji Bitter has stood alongside grassroots rugby, nurturing talent and community spirit.” She highlighted that the Marist Sevens represent more than just a sporting event; they embody the unity and pride deeply ingrained in Fiji’s rugby culture.
Among the exciting activities planned for the anniversary celebration is a special Legends Match, featuring rugby icons Waisele Serevi and Jerry Tuwai. Set to occur just before the men’s cup final, both legends will lead their teams, with each of the 15 players receiving five cartons of Fiji Bitter and a total prize of $5,000, in recognition of their significant contributions to the tournament’s legacy.
This milestone not only celebrates five decades of rugby excellence but also aims to inspire the next generation of Fijian rugby stars, reinforcing the belief that community and sports can create a brighter future for aspiring athletes. In doing so, the Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens tournament continues to play a vital role in nurturing talent and fostering the enduring spirit of rugby in Fiji.
