A 59-year-old man, Douglas E. Smith, is now facing several felony charges following a self-inflicted gunshot wound incident at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon as Smith shot himself near the upper-level baggage claim area in the South Terminal shortly after 3:34 p.m.
According to police reports, when officers arrived on the scene, they found Smith conscious and breathing with a gunshot wound to his left arm. Authorities determined that the injury was self-inflicted. Atlanta Police Major D. Wilson stated that Smith intentionally fired a handgun at himself after reaching the top of an escalator platform. A bystander quickly intervened, removing the weapon from Smith’s possession before officers secured the area.
Smith is set to face serious charges, including reckless conduct, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He will be taken to the Clayton County Jail upon his hospital release for treatment of his injuries.
