The Washington D.C. metro area is set to welcome a new attraction with the announcement of a second Sphere venue, following the highly acclaimed original in Las Vegas. Sphere Entertainment, the organization behind this innovative project, has secured a deal with the state of Maryland, Prince George’s County, and Peterson Companies to establish a Sphere at National Harbor, a vibrant tourism hotspot.
This new venue, described as a “smaller-scale” design, will feature 6,000 seats compared to the 18,600-seat capacity of its Las Vegas counterpart. The project is expected to benefit from a blend of public and private funding, bolstered by around $200 million in incentives from state, local, and private sectors.
Despite being smaller, the National Harbor Sphere will retain the striking “Exosphere” facade that characterizes the Las Vegas Sphere, and it will boast what is touted to be “the world’s highest-resolution LED screen” inside the theater. A rendering from Sphere shows the venue positioned near the Potomac River, close to the existing MGM Grand.
James Dolan, executive chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the company’s vision of creating a network of Sphere venues in progressive cities. He noted that this initiative aims to enhance the immersive experience for residents and visitors alike. Governor Wes Moore echoed this sentiment, highlighting the economic promise the Sphere project holds for Prince George’s County and affirming Maryland’s position as a premier destination for ambitious entertainment projects.
The first Sphere in Las Vegas has quickly become a key draw for tourists, known for its vibrant concerts and unique programming, such as a remastered version of The Wizard of Oz. The Maryland venue is expected to adopt a similar approach, providing a range of engaging experiences on a slightly smaller scale.
National Harbor is already a well-known destination, featuring attractions like The Capital Wheel, which offers breathtaking views of the D.C. skyline, along with the MGM Grand casino and various other entertainment options. The addition of the Sphere promises to further enhance this dynamic area.
As the third planned Sphere venue, following Las Vegas and a future location in Abu Dhabi, this project exemplifies the growing trend of immersive entertainment and is anticipated to enrich the cultural landscape of Maryland, drawing visitors and residents into a new realm of experiences.
