A Scottish set builder living in Australia, Craig Turpin, recently embarked on an impressive seven-day run around Viti Levu, completing over 480 kilometers to raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS in Fiji. Turpin commenced his challenge on November 3, starting in Nadi and making a full circuit through the region. He ended his run at Nadi Airport on November 9.
Turpin’s initiative is supported by a GoFundMe campaign, which has already exceeded its goal, amassing over $10,000. The campaign will close on December 1, with the highest donor set to receive the shirt worn by Turpin during his run. The funds will be allocated to non-government organizations in Fiji, focusing on grassroots education and awareness efforts, particularly among the youth who are pivotal in combating the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Originally from Leadhills, Scotland, Turpin developed a strong connection to Fiji over the past three years, frequently traveling to the country to work on set building projects. He expressed his passion for both running and giving back to a community that has captivated his heart. “I’ve always wanted to give something back to the country, and then I heard all about the issue of AIDS here,” he shared.
Despite facing challenging conditions, particularly the demanding terrain of Nabukadra—which included a 20-kilometer stretch with an elevation gain of over 1,000 meters—Turpin found strength in the support of the local community. Reflecting on his experience, he noted, “When you’re at your lowest, there would just be somebody around to pick you back up.” His interaction with the friendly locals, who greeted him with cheerful shouts of “Bula,” reaffirmed his resolve to finish the journey.
The significance of his endeavor resonates with ongoing public health efforts in Fiji. The country recently faced an alarming surge in HIV cases, with over 1,093 new infections reported from January to September 2024. This highlighted the urgent need for increased funding and community outreach initiatives to help combat the epidemic. Australia’s recent announcement of an additional AUD 4 million ($2.7 million USD) for Fiji’s HIV/AIDS response demonstrates international commitment to addressing this ongoing public health challenge.
Turpin’s run not only promotes health and wellness but fosters a sense of community involvement and support, aligning with the broader initiatives and events aimed at addressing health issues in Fiji. His efforts serve as a beacon of hope, showcasing how individual actions can contribute to significant positive change within communities. The fresh inspiration generated by such endeavors illustrates the potential for sports and physical challenges to unite people for critical causes, ensuring a healthier future for everyone in Fiji.
