Savusavu Hospital has faced significant challenges in providing essential healthcare services, having been without an X-ray facility for a year. This situation has resulted in patients having to travel to Labasa Hospital or incur expenses for private imaging services to receive necessary diagnostic care.

Penioni Ravunawa, the Assistant Health Minister, explained that the restoration of X-ray services hinges on completing a crucial electrical upgrade to the hospital’s existing power supply. He outlined a definitive plan for the installation of a new X-ray unit, which could be either a floor-mounted or ceiling-mounted system, dependent on the electrical enhancements.

“The necessary electrical upgrade is scheduled for this financial year,” Mr. Ravunawa stated. He expressed optimism that once the upgrade is finalized, the new X-ray system could be installed, ultimately restoring reliable diagnostic services and improving healthcare access for the community.

In the meantime, vulnerable groups, including expectant mothers, the elderly, accident victims, and individuals with suspected fractures, continue to experience the hardship of lengthy trips and added costs just to obtain basic imaging. The Assistant Health Minister reassured that the ministry remains devoted to making safe, phased improvements to health services while supporting frontline healthcare workers in their crucial roles.

The ongoing efforts indicate a commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure, ultimately aimed at better serving the community and alleviating some of the burdens currently faced by patients.
