RUP Investments PTE Limited, known for its retail brand Rups Big Bear, is embarking on an ambitious journey aimed at enhancing commercial solar energy adoption in Fiji while establishing itself as a leader in corporate sustainability and renewable energy initiatives. The popular brand, which has diversified its business portfolio to include property, forestry, manufacturing, and tourism, is set to significantly expand its solar capacity to a total of 1.5 megawatts (MW).

According to company director Javeer Rup, the organization’s solar endeavors are just beginning, having already installed approximately 500 kilowatts (kW) of on-grid solar energy. The firm aims to reach its target of around 1.5 MW at various Rups Big Bear locations as part of a broader sustainability strategy this year. Recently, solar installations were completed at the Rups Big Bear locations in Sigatoka, Tavua, and two outlets in Ba, a project that showcases the company’s commitment to sustainability that began in 2024.

Rups Big Bear is becoming a significant player in Fiji’s private-sector solar investments, with over 500 kW of grid-connected solar systems now in use across 11 locations, which include retail stores, warehouses, and industrial facilities. This investment translates to a reduction of more than 600 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, equivalent to the effect of planting approximately 30,000 trees—underscoring the environmental benefits for local communities and stakeholders.

In a groundbreaking move, Rup Investments has become the first company in Fiji to power a sawmill using on-grid solar energy. This initiative showcases the potential for large-scale solar deployment to be practical and environmentally responsible, aligning with Fiji’s national goals for carbon emission reduction and net-zero targets.

Rup Investments also manages over 700 acres of sustainably managed forest in Navua and was recently recognized as the Top Sawmill in the Central Division by the Ministry of Forestry for 2024. Their sawmill in Navua utilizes state-of-the-art timber processing equipment and employs over 40 full-time forestry staff, being one of the few firms in Fiji licensed by Fiji Hardwood Corporation to process sawn logs.

Mr. Rup emphasized the straightforward goal of the company: to have every Rups Big Bear store and facility in Fiji operate sustainably while ensuring reliable energy for staff and customers. He described the expansion of the solar portfolio as just the beginning of their commitment to contributing to a cleaner and greener Fiji.

The investment in solar energy not only lowers carbon emissions and operational costs but also sets a standard for environmental stewardship within Fiji’s corporate sector. By showcasing the scalability and impact of commercial solar energy, Rup Investments aims to inspire other businesses to adopt renewable solutions and support Fiji’s sustainability efforts. Mr. Rup believes that private sector leadership is crucial in driving Fiji’s transition toward sustainable energy practices.
