Rortvedt Waived; Dodgers Eye Rushing as Backup Catcher

The Los Angeles Dodgers recently experienced a roster change as catcher Ben Rortvedt was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Reds. Rortvedt, who is 28, served as the backup catcher to Will Smith during the Dodgers’ World Series-winning season, where the team triumphed over the Toronto Blue Jays in a thrilling seven-game series.

Rortvedt’s role was particularly crucial during Smith’s recovery from a hand fracture, which kept the starting catcher out for a portion of the regular season, including both Wild Card series victories against the Reds. He stepped up by starting in two of the four games during the National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, subsequently serving as Smith’s backup through the remainder of the playoffs.

Throughout his major league career, which spans across 227 games with teams including the Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, and Dodgers, Rortvedt has compiled a batting average of .190. His short stint with the Dodgers after being acquired from the Rays in July saw him achieving modest success, batting .224 with one home run and four RBIs in 18 regular season games. His postseason performance included three hits in seven at-bats.

Although Rortvedt made contributions to the Dodgers’ championship run, his move to waivers was anticipated. Having exhausted his minor league options, his experience became an asset for teams looking to enhance their rosters.

In a bid for continuity, the Dodgers are likely to promote Dalton Rushing, their top position player prospect, to take over the backup catching duties. Rushing has had a brief introduction to the majors, hitting .204 with four home runs during his 53-game appearance with the team in 2025.

This transition marks a new chapter for the Dodgers as they seek to maintain their competitive edge while grooming new talent.
