Roblox has announced the rollout of its age verification system in three countries, including Australia, coinciding with the implementation of the federal government’s social media ban for users under 16. This new system aims to enhance the safety of its users, requiring those who wish to privately message fellow players to verify their age.
In addition to the age verification requirement, Roblox will introduce age-based chat features, which will ensure that users can only engage in messaging with people of a similar age group. The enforcement of age checks is set to begin in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands during the first week of December, with a planned global launch in early January.
Australia’s impending ban on under-16s accessing various social media platforms, effective from December 10, does not currently include Roblox on the government’s targeted list. This development arrives amid increased scrutiny and legal challenges faced by Roblox in relation to child safety issues, as an array of states and nations introduce age verification regulations to protect young users.
