CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — In a determined display of resilience, Robert C. Byrd overcame a sluggish first-half performance to secure a thrilling 40-36 win against Ravenswood in the opening game of the Civil & Environmental Consultants Classic at RCB. The Eagles found themselves trailing by ten points at halftime, but adjusted their game strategy to play at a quicker pace, ultimately turning the tide in their favor.
The second quarter saw Ravenswood asserting dominance, outscoring Byrd 11-2 to lead 17-7 at the break. Jayme Salser led the Devilettes, contributing seven points, while the Eagles struggled to find their offensive rhythm early on. Ravenswood’s Marley Cole further extended the lead to twelve points in the third quarter, making it 23-11.
However, the Eagles’ fortunes began to shift in the latter stages of the third quarter, as they scored eight consecutive points in the final two minutes. A key free throw from Jada Sutherlin, coupled with contributions from Abri Williams and a three-pointer by Savanna Sherard, brought Robert C. Byrd to a close deficit of 24-22 entering the fourth quarter.
Head coach Robert Shields emphasized the importance of perseverance despite mistakes, stating, “Everybody is going to make mistakes. The key is to play through your mistakes, keep hustling and maybe you can make up for it on the defensive end.” This mentality was evident as the Eagles continued to push in the final quarter.
Sutherlin ignited the Eagles’ comeback with a timely three-point play, helping to tie the game at 27. Robert C. Byrd then took the lead for the first time in the game after a strong transition layup from Sutherlin. The Eagles maintained their momentum, pulling ahead as Ravenswood’s attempts to close the gap fell short.
With crucial free throws made by Kendall Sturm in the final moments and solid defensive plays limiting the Devilettes’ scoring opportunities, the Eagles solidified their lead, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure.
Sutherlin led her team with 12 points, while Sherard and Sturm contributed significantly with nine and eight points, respectively. The Eagles’ success was underscored by their effective shooting, making 10 of 19 attempts from the field in the second half.
Although Ravenswood experienced a challenging night with 24 turnovers, Salser’s impressive 13-point performance stood out, alongside Rachel Lambert’s nine points. The Devilettes fought hard but ultimately fell short, with their disappointing second half costing them the game.
This victory not only marks an important win for Robert C. Byrd but also highlights their potential and determination as they embark on a promising season ahead. The Eagles demonstrated that perseverance and teamwork can lead to success, inspiring hope as they continue to develop throughout the season.
