Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma is advocating for the suspension of a contractor affiliated with the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) following significant concerns expressed by the residents of Naqiliso Settlement. This urgent call to action was spurred by reports of development works conducted by FCS contractors which blocked a drain, causing flooding during the recent weekend.
In a statement shared on social media, Mr. Sharma praised the Assistant Minister for Health for visiting the settlement and acknowledged the media and relevant authorities for their prompt response to the issue. He emphasized that communication and engagement had proven crucial in bringing attention to the community’s plight.
Highlighting the situation, he stated, “Dialogue and debate led to action. I understand that there are endless issues, but there is always hope to act on them for the people of Fiji.” Mr. Sharma reiterated these concerns during the opening of Parliament, directly informing the Acting Attorney-General about the alleged misconduct exhibited by the contractor towards the residents.
Residents claimed that they were informed by the contractor that parts of their homes and a community prayer area were set to be demolished, a situation Mr. Sharma labeled as unacceptable. He firmly stated that immediate action should be taken against the contractor, urging for their suspension and added, “Learn some humility first.”
The issue affecting Naqiliso Settlement has garnered significant public attention, with residents voicing their fears about the impact of nearby construction on their community and the threat of flooding. The situation underlines the importance of effective communication between contractors and local residents, and it is hoped that swift actions will be taken to resolve these pressing concerns, ultimately fostering a better environment for the residents of Naqiliso Settlement.
