The United Football League (UFL) has officially announced that Ricky Proehl, a celebrated figure in St. Louis football history, will take the helm as head coach of the St. Louis Battlehawks. Proehl previously served as the team’s wide receivers coach during the 2023 season and replaces Anthony Becht, who has moved on to coach the Orlando Storm.

UFL President & CEO Russ Brandon expressed his confidence in Proehl’s capabilities, stating, “Ricky Proehl is the perfect fit to step into the shoes of head coach of the St. Louis Battlehawks. He has not only achieved greatness on the gridiron as a player and a coach, but he is deeply rooted in The Gateway City.”

Proehl’s legacy as a player is significant; he was part of the iconic “Greatest Show on Turf” team that led the Rams to numerous victories, including a memorable game-winning touchdown catch in the 1999 NFC Championship. This pivotal moment helped the Rams secure their Super Bowl XXXIV win against the Tennessee Titans. Over his 17-year NFL career, Proehl suited up for teams including the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams, Carolina Panthers, and Indianapolis Colts, amassing impressive career stats of 669 receptions for 8,878 yards and 54 touchdowns.

In his statement upon accepting the role, Proehl shared his affection for St. Louis, saying, “I have so many meaningful and special memories of St. Louis—not only because of the success on the field, but because of the people who made it feel like home.” He noted his intention to continue developing players and working towards bringing another championship to the passionate fans of St. Louis.

Following his playing career, Proehl transitioned into coaching, notably contributing to the Carolina Panthers’ journey to Super Bowl 50. His extensive experience and enduring ties to the city signify a promising new chapter for the Battlehawks as they prepare for the upcoming season.

David Dykeman, UFL Senior Vice President of Football Operations & Chief of Staff, shared the league’s enthusiasm, stating, “We are excited to welcome Ricky Proehl back as head coach of the St. Louis Battlehawks. Ricky had a legendary career in the city of St. Louis, and we know this franchise and fan base will be so excited to welcome him back.”

As the UFL approaches its 2026 season kickoff on March 27, Proehl’s return brings renewed energy and hope to the Battlehawks and their supporters.
