ESPN recently unveiled its list of the top 100 college quarterbacks from the year 2000 to the present, with two notable Baylor University quarterbacks making the cut. Bryce Petty was ranked at No. 99, while former Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III (RG3) secured the No. 10 spot.
Remarkably, RG3 finds himself positioned behind quarterbacks such as Marcus Mariota, Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, and Deshaun Watson, who were ranked just above him. Although he expressed gratitude for being recognized, Griffin III feels his achievements at Baylor merit a higher ranking. He voiced his opinion during a recent episode of his podcast, Outta Pockett.
Griffin commented on the rankings, stating, “Everyone on the list is deserving, but I think I should be higher. Any quarterback you ask will say they want to be at the top of the rankings. When you consider the impact I had at Baylor, winning the Heisman Trophy while competing against traditional powerhouses is something that makes a case for a higher ranking.”
He further elaborated on his influential role at Baylor, recalling how the program was revitalized during his tenure. Under his leadership, the Bears experienced their first winning season in 13 years and climbed to become one of the nation’s top teams during his Heisman-winning campaign. Griffin III’s impressive college statistics include over 10,000 passing yards, a 67% completion rate, 78 touchdowns, and 33 rushing touchdowns, showcasing his dual-threat capability.
Since Griffin III’s departure, Baylor has continued to see competitive talent at quarterback, including Petty and the current rising star, DJ Lagway, whom fans hope will replicate RG3’s success in Waco by 2026. As Griffin reflected on his ranking, he emphasized the significance of his contributions to Baylor’s football heritage, affirming that while he respects the list, he believes it does not fully capture the extent of his impact on the program.
Griffin III’s legacy remains a source of pride for Baylor fans as they look forward to a promising future for the program.
