December has proven to be a strong month for Reed Sheppard, the second-year guard for the Houston Rockets. Averaging 12.8 points and 3.6 assists over 26.4 minutes, Sheppard has showcased his skills, hitting 38.8% of his three-point shots. His continued development has not gone unnoticed by teammates and coaches alike.

As part of this season’s initiatives, the Rockets are releasing an all-access documentary series titled “In Flight,” featuring behind-the-scenes footage and interviews. The latest episode highlights Sheppard’s growth, who was drafted third overall in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft from the University of Kentucky.

Assistant coach Royal Ivey praised Sheppard’s talent, noting, “His shooting is definitely his best attribute, but he knows the game. He can read the game and make passes.” Ivey emphasized Sheppard has made significant strides in strength training to tackle the rigors of NBA play, making him increasingly resilient under pressure.

After a rather subdued rookie season, Sheppard has seized his opportunity this year, stating, “Last year didn’t go exactly as I planned, so this summer was a big summer for me.” He dedicated time to improve his defense, reflecting a clear commitment to personal development. Sheppard expressed that this rigorous training contributed to his confidence and performance on the court.

Sheppard’s role has expanded since Fred VanVleet suffered a knee injury, solidifying his position at point guard. The Rockets currently boast a record of 20-10, riding a three-game winning streak as they head into 2026. Their upcoming game against the Brooklyn Nets on New Year’s Day will be broadcast regionally and nationally, marking a hopeful start to the new year.

His reliability and consistent contributions off the bench have placed him in the conversation for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award. If Sheppard maintains his performance and the Rockets keep winning, his recognition as a key player is likely to grow as the season continues.
