Raiwaqa Market Vendor in Fiji Pursues a Business Degree While Supporting Family

Raiwaqa Market Vendor Balances Family, Community—and a Dream of a Business Diploma

Every sunrise presents new challenges, but for Akosita Lomawai, the commitment to support her family and pursue her goals propels her onward. Renowned for her dependability among both vendors and customers at the Raiwaqa market, Akosita is always ready to address various food needs, catering to both everyday meals and special occasions.

Her journey is fueled by a profound sense of love and responsibility. “I find peace in my market work. Many people come to buy from me, and on a good day, I can earn around $350,” Akosita shared. With a disciplined routine, she rises early each day to procure fresh produce directly from farmers, ensuring her stall is prepared for customers by 9 a.m. Akosita takes pride in offering a wide selection of fruits and vegetables, including bananas, plantains, and local leafy greens.

Originally from Cicia in Lau, Akosita is a mother to one biological daughter in Year 2 and is also caring for three other children. Her earnings not only sustain her family but also address community obligations. As a forward-thinking individual, she skillfully balances immediate needs with future planning, setting aside savings for unforeseen circumstances. “Everything from our market earnings goes towards family, church, and village obligations,” she explained.

In addition to her market endeavors, Akosita is ambitiously pursuing a diploma in business at Fiji National University after completing her first year of studies. She aims to inspire fellow women in Fiji by highlighting their pivotal roles in supporting families and contributing to the community.

Akosita exemplifies the strength and resilience prevalent among many Fijian women, showing that even humble beginnings in a market can lead to significant achievements. Her tale of perseverance serves as a source of inspiration for others to chase their dreams while serving their communities. As she continues her journey, Akosita not only uplifts her family but also fosters a collective sense of hope and empowerment among her peers, encouraging them to strive for their own success.
