Jon Rahm, a two-time major champion, has voiced his concerns regarding a new ruling by the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) board which limits the awarding of world ranking points to only the top 10 finishers at LIV Golf events. This significant decision marks the first instance in which players from the controversial Saudi Arabia-funded tour will receive points.

The OWGR board justified its decision by stating that LIV Golf does not fully meet the eligibility criteria established for world rankings. This limitation sets LIV Golf apart from the other 24 men’s professional golf tours included in the OWGR, where all players who make the cut are eligible to earn points based on their performance.

While attending LIV Golf’s season opener in Riyadh, Rahm expressed gratitude for the recognition that LIV players are starting to receive. However, he criticized the unequal treatment compared to other tours, remarking, “It seems like the rules that have been in place don’t really apply to us.” He highlighted that players on traditional tours earn full points despite competing in smaller fields, pointing out the inconsistency and perceived unfairness of the new ruling.

The ongoing debates surrounding LIV Golf and its integration into established golf structures reflect broader tensions within the sport, as players and fans alike seek fairness and recognition across different tournaments. Rahm’s comments echo a sentiment shared by many players who aspire for equitable treatment in the world of golf.
