Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has underscored the significance of focus and discipline for the recipients of the newly established 2026 Scholarship Awards as these students begin their academic journeys. During the recent launch event organized by the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB), Mr. Rabuka addressed the first group of 15 iTaukei students selected under this pivotal national education initiative.
In his remarks, he urged the students to steer clear of distractions, including peer pressure and substance abuse, particularly drugs and alcohol. “I urge you to not get distracted by peer pressure or get involved with drugs and alcohol,” he emphasized, highlighting the necessity of maintaining a clear vision of their academic objectives.
Mr. Rabuka elaborated on the importance of the TLTB Education Scholarship Fund, describing it as a vital investment made possible through the collaborative efforts of landowners. “This scholarship fund is an investment in our people, an investment in potential, and an investment in the long-term prosperity of iTaukei landowners,” he stated, reinforcing the need for recipients to remain dedicated to their educational aspirations and remember the underlying motivations for pursuing higher education.
Supported by the iTaukei Wealth Fund, this initiative aims to provide structured and equitable access to higher education for iTaukei students, particularly those from rural, maritime, and urban areas. The scholarship program offers financial assistance that is both merit-based and need-based, specifically targeting fields such as engineering, healthcare, aviation, business, information technology, finance, and land resource management.
Beyond tuition support, the program includes mentorship and internship opportunities, with a commitment from recipients to work in Fiji for three to five years after completing their studies. Mr. Rabuka also acknowledged the contributions of chiefs and landowners from TLTB-managed lands who helped establish this significant program by donating a portion of their earnings. He concluded by urging the scholarship recipients to seize the opportunities before them.
This scholarship initiative marks a promising step towards empowering iTaukei youth, equipping them with the resources and support needed to thrive in their educational pursuits, which will, in turn, have positive ripple effects on the wider community.
