Qatar Grand Prix Implements Two-Pit-Stop Rule to Boost Tyre Safety

In a notable development for the 2025 Formula 1 season, drivers will be required to complete at least two pit-stops during the Qatar Grand Prix. This regulation change was initiated after discussions between tyre supplier Pirelli, the teams, and the FIA, aimed at prioritizing driver safety.

The new rule stipulates that tyres must not be used for more than 25 laps at the Lusail International Circuit, which hosts the race that spans 57 laps. Consequently, competitors will be mandated to make at least one pit-stop no later than the 25th lap.

It’s essential to note that the 19-lap sprint race will not be affected by this tyre restriction. Additionally, the regulation specifies that laps conducted during the formation, laps to the grid, and those after the chequered flag will not count towards the 25-lap tyre limit. However, laps completed under safety car or virtual safety car conditions will be included in this count.

Pirelli previously implemented an 18-lap stint length in 2023 due to concerns about tyre wear and potential damage throughout the race. In the following year, while there were no explicit restrictions, concerns about high wear levels became apparent after both Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz experienced punctures.

“Our analysis revealed that under the conditions of the previous races, especially the high lateral forces, certain tyres, especially the left front, reached critical wear levels,” Pirelli commented. They emphasized that the current measures are essential for enhancing safety and performance on track.

This isn’t the first instance of such pit-stop mandates in the current season; the Monaco Grand Prix also saw a similar requirement, introduced to enhance the excitement of on-track action. The adjustments reflect the FIA’s ongoing commitment to maintaining competitive racing while ensuring the safety of all participants.
