The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has reported that a majority of participants in a recent public consultation on electricity tariff adjustments have shown support for the proposed changes. Out of 975 submissions, 51 percent expressed agreement with the rationale behind the adjustments, acknowledging the necessity to enhance Fiji’s electricity infrastructure and promote a transition to renewable energy sources.
The feedback from the consultation highlighted that supporters of the tariff changes are in favor of a phased implementation to minimize the financial impact on consumers. However, there remains a significant concern among the public regarding the rising cost of living. Approximately 37 percent of participants voiced opposition to any increase in electricity tariffs, citing the increasing financial pressures faced by households and rising costs of non-regulated goods and services.
In response to these mixed sentiments, the FCCC has postponed its decision on final electricity tariffs until April 30, 2026. This delay allows for further discussions with Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) and the government to explore possible support measures and financing options.
The FCCC continues to emphasize its commitment to balancing the necessary infrastructure investments with the protection of consumers, fostering a hopeful outlook for sustainable energy development in Fiji while addressing public concerns.
