Premier League Predictions Challenge Heats Up as 80-Match Sprint Looms

Matchday 14 of The Athletic’s Premier League predictions challenge has arrived, bringing an exciting slate of games that will see 80 matches played over the next six weeks. This intense period represents more than one-fifth of the complete season packed into just 41 days, making it a critical time for teams to establish momentum as well as for our predictions table.

In a weekly competition, four participants — a guest subscriber, an algorithm, six-year-old Wilfred, and I — make our predictions for the outcomes of Premier League matches. Points are awarded as follows: three for a correct scoreline, one for a correct result, and an additional bonus point for any unique prediction. This week, after a two-week pause, the algorithm reclaimed the lead in our predictions table with an impressive tally of four points from a unique prediction of a 1-1 draw between Chelsea and Arsenal.

The table is tighter than ever, with only seven points separating all four of us. Wilfred continues his strong run this week, registering five correct results and earning the bonus point for correctly predicting Brighton’s victory over Nottingham Forest. He is now level on points with our guest subscriber, Kian, both sitting at 81 points overall, although Wilfred holds the advantage with more correct scoreline predictions.

This week’s guest subscriber is Ben, a Wolverhampton Wanderers supporter based in Walsall, who anticipates a pivotal match against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday evening. Although many Wolves fans have largely lost faith in salvaging what has been a challenging season, a win against an improving Forest could generate some much-needed positive momentum under the guidance of manager Rob Edwards. Ben predicts a 1-1 draw, reflecting the team’s lack of scoring prowess this season.

In addition to Wolves vs. Nottingham Forest, several key matchups are on the horizon. Fulham faces Manchester City, aiming to break a notoriously bleak record of 18 consecutive losses to them. Meanwhile, Bournemouth and Everton, both reeling from heavy defeats, are likely to struggle to find their footing, leading to a predicted 1-1 stalemate.

Newcastle, seeking to replicate their recent success, will take on an underperforming Tottenham, with expectations leaning toward a home victory of 2-0. Brighton, currently in fifth place, will host Aston Villa, who are pushing for Champions League qualification. This clash is expected to be competitive, with a prediction of a narrow 2-1 victory for Villa.

As the schedule continues to intensify, the importance of each match magnifies for teams and predictions alike. Teams must harness any momentum they can generate, while our predictions challenge highlights the unpredictable nature of the league, promising an eventful few weeks ahead. Each match presents an opportunity for teams to reshape their seasons and for predictors to gain ground in the standings, ensuring that excitement remains high for fans and participants alike.
