The Public Rental Board (PRB) has announced a new policy that limits tenants to two tenancy terms, totaling approximately six years, in PRB flats. Minister for Housing Maciu Nalumisa explained that each term lasts three years, and the intention is to encourage tenants to transition into home ownership once they complete this duration.

Nalumisa emphasized that PRB flats serve as transitional housing designed to allow tenants the time they need to establish themselves in employment and adequately plan for their future. He stated, “There should be ample time for everyone to start looking for housing opportunities.” He advised tenants to actively seek alternative housing options during their stay in PRB properties.

PRB General Manager Timoci Naleba noted that the enforcement of tenancy limits had not been consistent in the past. However, with the new policy, the board is committed to ensuring these terms are met. He highlighted the importance of tenants saving money to ultimately purchase their own properties. After the initial three-year term, tenants will undergo an assessment to evaluate their financial readiness to move out. If they are not yet prepared, they may be granted an additional term based on their savings progress.

This initiative aims to promote fair access to rental units while fostering long-term housing stability through home ownership. By encouraging tenants to take proactive steps towards securing their future, the PRB hopes to facilitate a smoother transition into permanent housing solutions.
