Anastasia Potapova has recently become the latest in a line of Russian-born tennis players to change their national representation by successfully obtaining Austrian citizenship. The world number 51, aged 24, had been competing on the WTA Tour as a neutral athlete due to a ban on Russian and Belarusian players representing their countries in light of the ongoing conflict following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
In addition to Potapova, several other players have made similar transitions since the invasion. Notable names include Daria Kasatkina, who now represents Australia, Varvara Gracheva for France, Elina Avanesyan for Armenia, Maria Timofeeva for Uzbekistan, and Natela Dzalamidze for Georgia.
Potapova’s journey has not been without controversy. Earlier this year, she received a formal warning from the WTA after she appeared in a match wearing a T-shirt featuring the emblem of Russian soccer team Spartak Moscow. This incident was perceived as a display of support for Russia, leading to criticism from fellow player Iga Swiatek. Potapova defended her actions, asserting her long-standing loyalty to Spartak since the age of 13 and denying any intent to provoke.
This change in allegiance reflects a growing trend among athletes navigating the complexities of international sports amid geopolitical tensions.
