Cody Haggard, a student-athlete from Polson High, recently had the opportunity to participate in the prestigious Native All-American game held in Minnesota. This unique event took place at the U.S. Bank Stadium, the home field of the Minnesota Vikings, and showcased some of the best young football talent from across the nation.
Prior to the game, players were granted access to tour the impressive stadium and its practice facilities, an experience that left Haggard in awe. “It kind of hit me then, not fully, but the shock of just how big the stadium is and just how it’s going to feel going onto the field,” he shared about his feelings as he took in the grandeur of the venue.
While football was a central element, the Native All-American game aimed to honor and celebrate Native American culture by uniting players from diverse backgrounds. Before the game commenced, the coaching staff led a traditional ceremonial gathering. Haggard noted, “Levi Horn went ahead and smudged for us, so we got in a big circle and it was just counting our blessings and making sure we’re ready to go and just get in touch with basically our ancestors and everybody else.”
Haggard’s family accompanied him on this remarkable journey, which made the experience even more special. “Just them getting to go with me, they were so glad they were able to travel and kind of also help represent because everybody is a reflection of where you come from,” he expressed.
As Cody reflects on this life-changing opportunity, he is uncertain about the next steps in his football career. However, he remains optimistic that the connections and experiences gained from participating in the Native All-American game will open new doors for his future endeavors in athletics. Haggard’s story is a testament to the powerful blend of sports, culture, and family, highlighting the positive impacts of such experiences on young athletes.
