Highway Patrol Officer Andy Chan, a respected member of the Philadelphia police force, has passed away after suffering critical injuries from a motorcycle crash six years ago. Officer Chan, who was 55 years old and a 24-year veteran of the police department, had been receiving around-the-clock care since the accident. His tragic passing on December 2 has prompted an outpouring of support from the community and his fellow officers, who had previously fundraised to assist with his medical expenses.
To honor his memory, the city will observe road closures surrounding his funeral services scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. Initially, several streets in the neighborhoods of Callowhill, Chinatown, and Center City will close starting Monday evening for a first viewing, followed by additional closures on Tuesday for a second viewing and the funeral ceremony itself.
The first viewing is set to take place at Holy Redeemer Chinese Catholic Church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, December 4. The second viewing will occur on Tuesday at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul from 8:15 a.m. to 10:40 a.m., leading directly into the funeral services.
Road closures will take effect at various times to facilitate the services, with drivers advised to use alternate routes and expect delays. Specific closures include Ridge Avenue, Vine Street, and Broad Street, among others, with certain streets designated for “No Parking” during the events.
In addition to traffic restrictions, SEPTA bus detours are anticipated, with live service updates to be provided online. The community is encouraged to come together in support of Officer Chan’s family during this difficult time, reflecting the sense of camaraderie and respect he cultivated throughout his career.
