Pennsylvania Grants Record Tax Credit for HBO’s Task

Pennsylvania is making a significant investment in the film industry, allocating $49.8 million for the second season of the HBO drama series “Task.” This marks the largest tax credit granted to a single Hollywood production in the state’s history. The Pennsylvania Film Office announced this initiative on Monday, highlighting the project’s potential to create approximately 3,700 jobs and pump $194.1 million into the local economy.

Film Commissioner Gino Anthony Pesi emphasized the importance of this announcement, noting that it reflects Governor Josh Shapiro’s dedication to fostering film and television opportunities within Pennsylvania. “Supporting productions like ‘Task’ has a powerful impact on Pennsylvania’s creative economy through the creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs, while also giving new opportunities to local businesses in the southeastern region,” Pesi stated. He expressed a desire to continue the partnership with HBO to further develop the creative industries across the Commonwealth.

“Task,” created by Chester County native Brad Ingelsby, stars Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent working to combat a series of robberies linked to biker gangs in the Philadelphia suburbs. Ingelsby shared his gratitude for the opportunity to narrate stories that resonate with the local culture and collaborate with Pennsylvania residents.

HBO production executive vice president Janet Graham Borba echoed these sentiments, expressing appreciation for the collaboration with Governor Shapiro and Pennsylvania. She noted that the locations used in and around Philadelphia lend an authenticity that enriches the series.

The financial support is made possible through Pennsylvania’s Film Production Tax Credit Program, which offers tax credits ranging from 25% to 30% to productions that commit at least 60% of their budgets within the state. Eligible productions must also be aimed at national or international audiences.

In addition to “Task,” recent projects filmed in the Philadelphia area include the Netflix comedy series “Tires,” featuring Shane Gillis, and the Apple TV crime drama miniseries “Dope Thief.” This investment in film and television production not only celebrates local talent but also positions Pennsylvania as a growing hub for the entertainment industry, promising a vibrant future for its creative economy.
