Pelicans Owner Denies Sale Rumors as Franchise’s Future Is Assessed

Speculation regarding the potential sale and relocation of the New Orleans Pelicans has intensified, particularly as NBA owners seem more inclined towards European expansion. However, team owner Gayle Benson has firmly denied any intentions to sell the franchise or relocate it, particularly to cities like Seattle or Las Vegas. In an interview with Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Benson emphasized, “Let me be clear about this: The teams are not for sale. That’s in capital letters. I want everybody to know the teams are not for sale.” She expressed her frustration with the ongoing rumors, adding, “I get tired of people asking me [if they’re for sale].”

Benson, who will turn 79 in January, acknowledged that speculation surrounding ownership could be a waste of time. She stated that upon her passing, the teams would be sold to the highest bidder, with the proceeds aimed entirely at benefiting the local community.

In terms of the team’s performance, the Pelicans are struggling this season with a dismal 2-9 record, raising questions about the future of head coach Willie Green. Benson reassured fans of her support for Green while highlighting the role of new head of basketball operations Joe Dumars in assessing both the coach and the team. “I trust Joe, because I feel like he knows people,” she noted, referencing Dumars’ long-standing relationship with Green. The future of the coaching staff seems to hinge on Dumars’ evaluations.

Historically, the Pelicans have struggled to maintain a competitive edge, missing the playoffs for the last two seasons and only reaching the postseason twice in the past eight years, both times exiting in the first round. This history has contributed to a less than favorable reputation among players and agents. Former Pelican Kendrick Perkins shared his thoughts on the matter, pointing out that the city’s deep football roots often overshadow the basketball team. He remarked, “They’re always going to be second to the New Orleans Saints… It’s so bad that if you want to eat… you gotta walk across the street to the Saints’ facility just to eat.”

While Benson’s commitment to the community and the team remains steadfast, her reluctance to make significant investments in the franchise or its facilities could contribute to ongoing challenges. Nevertheless, Pelicans fans are left hopeful that Dumars’ leadership will help guide the team to improved performance in the future.
