The New England Patriots might have to navigate the next few weeks without one of their standout defensive players, as defensive tackle Milton Williams is dealing with a high ankle sprain. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Williams could be sidelined for “multiple weeks” following his injury sustained during the Patriots’ 27-14 victory over the New York Jets on Thursday night.
Williams suffered the injury on the game’s opening drive. Although he returned briefly early in the second quarter, head coach Mike Vrabel ultimately decided to keep him out for the remainder of the game after he played eight defensive snaps. Vrabel explained his rationale, stating, “I made a decision that felt like we should start treating that thing and get ahead of it and see where he is (Monday) and in the next couple of days.” He acknowledged that Williams wanted to continue playing, but Vrabel felt that prioritizing recovery was best for both the player and the team.
At just 26 years old, Williams has proven to be a formidable force on the Patriots’ defensive line, having signed the largest contract in the team’s history last offseason. This season, he has recorded impressive statistics, including 3.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits, and 32 pressures over 11 games.
Fortunately for the Patriots, they have two upcoming games before their bye week that appear to be manageable. They will face off against the 3-6 Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday, followed by a Monday night match against the 2-8 New York Giants. It is likely that Williams will miss both games, and he may require at least three weeks to fully recover.
The Patriots will return from their bye week on December 14 when they host the Buffalo Bills in a crucial AFC East contest. As Williams’s potential return could coincide with this vital game, fans will eagerly anticipate updates on his recovery, hoping he will be back in time to help the team tackle quarterback Josh Allen and the Bills.
