Papua New Guinea is reinforcing its stance against illegal firearms, with Prime Minister James Marape declaring that anyone caught in possession of such weapons could face life imprisonment. This strong announcement was made during a press conference where Marape launched a weapons amnesty program and appointed Kombiam–Ambum MP, Sir John Pundari, to oversee the police portfolio.
Marape pointed to the ongoing violence in the Upper Highlands as a critical motivator for this initiative and urged citizens to surrender any illegal weapons. He promised support during the forthcoming amnesty period, emphasizing, “If you are in possession of an illegal weapon, surrender it.”
The government is set to release an official timeline for the amnesty period soon. Marape assured citizens that while assistance will be provided to those who comply, strict enforcement will follow once the amnesty ends. “We will embrace you during the amnesty period, but once it ends, enforcement will be firm and uncompromising,” he declared.
To strengthen the government’s efforts against gun violence and crime nationwide, specialized police intelligence teams are already deployed to gather information on illegal weapons. Marape stressed the pressing need for action, stating that the current state of gun-related crime is unacceptable. Police units are preparing to focus on areas recognized as violence hotspots, with the aim of enhancing public safety across Papua New Guinea.
