Artemi Panarin made a significant mark in his new role with the Los Angeles Kings, scoring his first goal for the team as they triumphed over the New York Islanders 5-3 on Thursday night. This victory also marked the first win under interim head coach D.J. Smith, who took over after the Kings’ recent struggles had dropped them out of playoff contention.

In addition to Panarin’s goal, Mikey Anderson and Adrian Kempe each contributed a goal and an assist, while goaltender Darcy Kuemper made 31 crucial saves during the game. Samuel Helenius and Alex Laferriere also found the back of the net, helping the Kings secure only their second victory since January.

Kings captain Anze Kopitar, who played in his 1,500th career game, was pivotal in the match, assisting on Panarin’s goal. This milestone places him among the elite, as he becomes the 25th player in NHL history to reach this achievement. As Kopitar prepares for retirement following this season, he is just five points shy of overtaking Marcel Dionne as the Kings’ all-time leading scorer.

The Islanders faced tough competition, managing to create some excitement with an impressive goal from Bo Horvat, who scored with just a second remaining in the second period. Despite this effort, the team is struggling, having suffered back-to-back losses in Southern California against the Kings and the Ducks, resulting in a combined score of 10-4.

Adam Pelech also made his mark for the Islanders, scoring a shorthanded goal to add to the tally, while Ilya Sorokin recorded 30 saves in the goal. The Islanders had a strong winning streak of five games prior to these defeats, but now face an uphill battle as they head into their next matchup against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.

For the Kings, they will host the Montreal Canadiens on the same day, looking to build on their momentum from this victory as they navigate the remainder of the season. With Panarin settling in and giving the Kings a potential boost, fans have much to look forward to as the race for the playoffs heats up.
