Padres sign Ty Adcock to bolster bullpen for 2026 season

The San Diego Padres have fortified their bullpen by signing right-hander Ty Adcock to a major league contract for the upcoming 2026 season. The financial terms of the one-year deal remain undisclosed.

Adcock, 28, joins the Padres after spending the previous two seasons with the New York Mets. Throughout his time in the major leagues, Adcock has played in 18 games for the Mets and Seattle Mariners, maintaining a record of 0-0 with a 5.48 ERA.

Originally selected by the Mariners in the eighth round of the 2018 MLB Draft, Adcock has recorded a 1.04 WHIP and has held opponents to a .227 batting average, along with 19 strikeouts over 23 innings pitched. This strong performance could prove beneficial for the Padres, especially considering they are likely to lose closer Robert Suarez to free agency in the coming winter.

Following his stint with the Mets, Adcock was assigned to Triple-A Syracuse in August and later opted for free agency in October. During the 2025 season, he posted a 1-3 record with a 4.66 ERA in 31 games for Syracuse, showcasing his potential by limiting opponents to a mere .197 batting average and striking out 35 batters over 36.2 innings.

Adcock possesses a powerful 97-mph fastball, complemented by a slider, cutter, and an occasional splitter. Though his major league experience has been limited, he stands to gain more opportunities in San Diego, especially under the guidance of the Padres’ new pitching coach, Ruben Niebla, and rookie manager Craig Stammen, who was appointed to replace Mike Shildt on November 6.

Adcock’s journey has not come without its challenges, including a right shoulder impingement that sidelined him after being drafted from Elon University, along with missing the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2021. Nevertheless, he broke through in the Mariners system in 2022 and earned his major league debut in 2023, where he impressively limited runs to just seven across 15.2 innings in his rookie season.

After being designated for assignment by the Mariners in April 2024, Adcock was briefly with the Detroit Tigers before landing with the Mets. Now, with the Padres, he aims to continue his development and make a significant impact in the upcoming season.
