Representatives from Fiji and other Pacific nations are currently participating in a fellowship in Sydney, Australia, focused on Climate Change and the Pacific region. This initiative is organized by Australia’s Diplomacy Training Program (DTP), an effort supported by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs, aimed at strengthening regional partnerships and enhancing development capacity.
Clare Sidoti, the Programs and Communications Manager at DTP, emphasized that the fellowship is designed to bring together individuals from seven Pacific Islands to share their experiences related to human rights and climate change issues. She stated, “We’re bringing together Pacific representatives to share their advocacy, to raise awareness and also to tell stories to try and build up solidarity especially since we’re moving towards COP31.”
Throughout the program, participants will have the opportunity to visit three major Australian cities—Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne—engaging with various stakeholders, including development NGOs, academic institutions focused on climate and human rights, government ministries, and media organizations. This structured interaction is expected to create a platform for dialogue on the pressing impacts of climate change facing Oceania.
The fellowship’s commencement is marked by a Fijian delegation already present in Sydney, prepared to contribute to the discussions and advocate for the Pacific’s ongoing climate-related challenges.
